Cup - Small Koishiwara-yaki by Asemi Co

Variant
1 item left

The Asemi Co Koisiware-yaki cups are crafted by artisan Yusuke Kumagae in Koishiware, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.

The black metallic finish of the Koishiwara-yaki cup is achieved through a unique glaze developed by Koishiwara Artisan Yusuke Kumagae. He mixes iron powder to the rice straw ash that he uses as the glaze.

To create the distinct pattern on the cups, the artisan uses a metal tool to apply chatter markings on the half-dry surface while the cup is turning on the potter's wheel. This technique is called “Tobikanna,” meaning "jumping iron."

The result is a Contemporary folk craft cup with an amazing subtle metallic gloss and the unique “Tobikanna“ detail.
